Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race on CNN''s MAINSAIL Programme

The Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race will feature on CNN's MAINSAIL programme this week.
A series of coincidences involving the remains of hurricane Bertha made this year's Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland race, which is organised by the RORC, a multi record breaking event.
The images captured at the start and from the boats during the race will be well worth watching. The air times that we have from CNN are as follows -

DAY 14 AM UPDATEBefore the 2014 Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race, a Two-Handed team had never completed the 1800-mile course. However three teams from Ireland, Britain and Germany have now accomplished that magnificent achievement. Racing Two-Handed around Britain and Ireland requires all-round skill, great seamanship and tenacity. Most of the time, the Two-Handed pair are alone on deck. Whilst a team mate sleeps, it can be a lonely existence on deck and the lack of sleep and the effects of exposure to the harshest of conditions is bound to take its toll on both yacht and sailor.
Liam Coyne's First 36.7, Lula Belle, with Brian Flahive as crew, finished the Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race at 11:40:54 on Saturday 23rd August in an elapsed time of 12 days 02 hours 40 minutes 54 seconds. The duo won the Two Handed Class and the combined IRC Three and IRC Four Class.
Every Finisher’s A Winner

Three yachts finished the Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race on Friday 23rd August, deciding the winners of both IRC One and IRC Two and there were celebrations on the dock for Relentless on Jellyfish, winner of IRC Two and Saga, winner of IRC One.
British Soldier may have lost the battle with Relentless on Jellyfish, but the British Army Sailing Team was far richer for the experience.
J/122, Relentless on Jellyfish, skippered by James George and owned by Chris Radford, crossed the finish line of the Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race at 14:52:57 on 22 August to win IRC Two. Relentless on Jellyfish has been competing in the RORC Season's Points Championship since May and their result in the Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race has lifted them to top yacht in IRC Two and third overall for the season. The crew let out a big cheer as they heard the news dockside.
Varuna Declared Overall Winner

DAY 12 Morning update
Race sponsors Sevenstar Yacht Transport have also awarded Jens Kellinghusen with a $20,000 voucher to ship Varuna to their selected destination worldwide, which will be used to transport Varuna to Malta to take part in the Rolex Middle Sea Race, the final race of the RORC Season's Points Championship.
Although six yachts are still racing, none of them can better Varuna's corrected time racing under IRC. Jens Kellinghusen was quick to praise his crew for their performance, Varuna has no powered winches and the tough conditions required tremendous physical exertion and long hours hiking out on the rail.
"The weather conditions really suited Varuna. Our biggest competition was with the canting keel boats, which would have preferred reaching, but the downwind conditions towards the end were ideal for us. I am so happy for the crew as they all did a great job and the boat held together in some testing conditions. I am very pleased, this is the first time we have participated and we really enjoyed the race. We already use Sevenstar for transporting Varuna, so the $20,000 from the sponsors is very much appreciated."

Six yachts are still racing in the Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race and after light winds slowed their progress yesterday (Wednesday) morning, the wind picked up overnight much to the delight of the remaining competitors. British Soldier and Relentless on Jellyfish are having a tremendous battle in IRC Two and the three remaining Two-Handed teams are making great progress.
Wednesday afternoon JV 53, Bank von Bremen, skippered by Carol Smolawa and crewed by members of the SKWB (Segelkameradschaft das Wappen von Bremen), crossed the finish line of the Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race completing the race in under 12 days to claim third position in IRC Zero.
"We had a bit of everything thrown at us in the race, the start was fantastic, downwind through the Solent and east out through the Straits of Dover but it was very tough up the North Sea and all the way around to St.Kilda on the west coast of Scotland," commented Carol Smolawa. "We had to tack against heavy winds and we were very happy when we passed the Shetlands and thought, good, we can now go downwind; but the low pressure just followed us all the time.
"I will remember the gale in the west and we had so many different situations to deal with and such high speeds. We had a daily distance of around 240 miles a day and that's incredible! The most special moment was when we had to set the storm jib. A safety warning was coming in from the Coastguard with Gale force 10 expected and we were prepared when the huge waves came crashing onto the boat. Our boat was strong and our crew made it.
"Finishing the race and coming back to Cowes is such a great feeling. We made it and it was such an amazing experience. It was the first time the SKWB Club and myself, plus all the young sailors on board, have done this race. Many years ago I saw the boats preparing for the Round Britain and Ireland Race and I thought `I will do that one day'. It was so great and such an honour to do this race.
"We wrote to our Club saying that we have 11 sets of foulweather clothing and boots for sale at the end of this race! However, in a couple of days we will have changed our minds and you might see us in four years time. The RORC is such a great organisation and thank you all for such a great race, with great moments for us."

Swish, skippered by Canadian Roderick Knowles, crossed the finish line of the 2014 Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race off the Royal Yacht Squadron, Cowes at 04.06.49 BST on Wednesday 20th August 2014 with an elapsed time of 8 days, 19 hours, 06 minutes and 49 seconds. Subject to ratification by the World Speed Sailing Record Council, this breaks the previous World Record for Monohulls 40 feet and less, set by Concise 2 in 2010, by over 18 hours.
This will be the fifth World Record broken during the 2014 Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club. Celebrating dockside with his crew, Roderick Knowles spoke about the record breaking 1800 mile lap around the British Isles and Ireland.
"We knew that we were the only Class40 left in the race and from that moment on, our only goal was to finish the race. So to break the record is just fantastic. Right out of the blocks we had tough conditions and it was painful, several competitors set off at full speed with masthead kites but we were more cautious, up until we got to about half way up the coast of Scotland we had 30 knots of wind most of the time. It was quite a pleasant reach around Muckle Flugga but the toughest conditions were on the approach to St.Kilda, we hoved to for a few minutes and put the storm sails on.
"I have a very small number of miles compared to the crew, so for me it was an enormous learning experience. Nick (Legatt) as navigator, was excellent and I have learnt so much from his seamanship. But when it comes down to it, it was just four blokes, the youngest is 40, so we didn't argue about anything or take anything personally. The atmosphere was very relaxed on board and I didn't hear an ill-word all trip. It is incredible and really cool that we beat the world record by over 18 hours, I have never held a world record before."

Swish on Record Pace: Day Nine AM Update

At 0800 BST on Tuesday 19th August nine yachts were still racing in the Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race. Ifan James, skipper of Stimpson 42 Palpatine, contacted the Royal Ocean Racing Club yesterday to retire from the race with all crew well. Palpatine left the Isle of Lewis in the early hours of Tuesday morning and is currently passing the Isle of Skye, east of the Outer Hebrides. A scenic sail past the stunning lochs of the West Coast of Scotland in good weather and dry clothes will be a dream compared to the rough conditions experienced over the last few days.
Roderick Knowles' Class40, Swish, rounded The Lizard just before dawn this morning. They are 150 miles from the finish and speeding along at over 8 knots, well inside world record pace for a yacht of 40ft or less. Swish is expected to finish the Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race in the early hours of Wednesday morning (20th August).

Day Eight: AM Update
Ten yachts are still racing in the Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race although the next yacht to finish the gruelling 1800 mile race is not expected until tomorrow evening. Over the last 24 hours a low pressure system that arrived from the north west is bringing gale force headwinds that are hampering the progress of the fleet north of the Irish coast.
Roderick Knowles' Class40, Swish, is in the Celtic Sea, 340 miles from the finish and is expected around midnight tomorrow (Tuesday). At their current pace, Swish is almost 24 hours inside the world record for yachts of 40ft or less.
Roderick Knowles sent this message back to the RORC Media Team. "The instruments are playing up so we have no wind readings and we have blown out our gennaker. The good news is we have fixed our fractional kite. All is well, but we are very wet and it has been a tough couple of days, especially on Saturday when we had three reefs in, but now on full main and with that record on our minds, we are pushing when we can!"
Katrin Hilbert's Custom JV52, Hapsa Hamburg, is currently halfway across the Celtic Sea and 300 miles from the finish. Carol Smolawa's JV53, Bank von Bremen, was making good progress this morning having passed Slea Head and making good progress along the stunning coastline, south west of the Ring of Kerry, with 430 miles still to complete.

Day Seven: PM Update
Jens Kellinghusen's Ker 51, Varuna crossed the finish line of the 2014 Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race at 12.10.32 BST on 17th August 2014. Varuna is now in first place in IRC overall, with a number of yachts still to finish. Varuna's time, corrected under IRC, puts the German yacht in an extremely strong position to win the Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race.
"This is the first time we have participated in this race, because we normally take part in a transatlantic race from Newport to Hamburg which overlaps with this one," commented Jens Kellinghusen.
"I am very please we did well and we really enjoyed the race. The islands on the west coast of Ireland are very beautiful and it is scenery that we haven't seen before. The first two days were a test of endurance for the crew and the boat, but it was no problem as we settled into a routine. Most of the team have sailed together for 12 years, so to get a good result makes me feel very happy. It is the result of having a great boat, a great designer and a great crew. We take Varuna all over the world to compete in the best races. That is our goal, success may come and we are happy when it does, but taking part is the most important thing and experiencing the best race courses with a crew that is happy together. If we have won this race, it makes me very happy for the crew as they have worked incredibly hard."

Day Seven: AM Update
Artemis-Team Endeavour, skippered by Brian Thompson, crossed the finish line of the 2014 Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race off the Royal Yacht Squadron, Cowes at 23.00.54 BST on Saturday 16th August 2014 with an elapsed time of 5 days, 14 hours, 00 minutes and 54 seconds, setting a new World Record for Monohulls 60 feet and less (subject to ratification by the WSSRC).
Artemis-Team Endeavour had enjoyed an epic battle with Andrew Budgen and Fred Schwyn's Volvo 70, Monster Project for IRC Line Honours and the Canting Keel Class. Artemis-Team Endeavour crossed the line just over an hour and 20 minutes ahead of Monster Project to win the class on corrected time and set the benchmark for the IRC fleet to try and better.
"It feels good to break the record," smiled Brian Thompson, just after the finish. "We had a great crew, great boat and good competition the whole way round. I have broken records before, but it is often solo and not in a race, so it was great to have so many boats on the start line and to sail with a fantastic bunch of people. Monster Project gave us a great battle the whole way around the course and so it was more than just about breaking a record; it was a tremendous race.
"The stand out leg for us was after St.Kilda. We put the spinnaker up for the first time and we were sailing hot angles, surfing down waves. We had lots of good drivers on board so we kept the boat flying along all the time. That was the key; keep changing drivers, keep trimming and we kept rumbling along. We had come from the cold wet North Sea into fantastic weather with blue sky speeding along downwind and we were loving it."

This breaks the previous World Record, for Monohulls 60 feet and less, set by Safran, in 2011, by 19 hours, 48 minutes and 16 seconds. Artemis - Team Endeavour's record is subject to ratification by the World Speed Sailing Record Council.
This is the fourth World Record broken during the 2014 Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club.
Tough at the Top

At 1400 BST, the forecast strong westerly winds had arrived at the north of the course for the Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race, providing challenging conditions for the yachts in the region. Three competitors have retired in the last 24 hours and Jankees Lampe's Open 40, La Promesse has suspended racing and is heading for Stornoway to affect mainsail repairs, before restarting the race.
Tonight or early tomorrow, the leading yachts racing under IRC in the Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race are expected to cross the finish line when another world record is set to be broken and line honours for the IRC fleet will be decided.
Jens Kellinghusen's German Ker 51, Varuna leads the IRC fleet by an estimated nine hours on corrected time. At 1400 BST, Varuna was just off the Scilly Isles, and gybed onto port for the 240 mile downwind leg to the finish. Ahead of Varuna on the water, but behind after time correction was Brian Thompson's IMOCA 60, Artemis-Team Endeavour and Andrew Budgen and Fred Schwyn's, Volvo 70, Monster Project. The two canting keel yachts have been battling for IRC line honours boat for boat.
The Records Continue to Tumble

Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing's Volvo Ocean 65, Azzam, skippered by Ian Walker, crossed the finish line of the 2014 Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race off the Royal Yacht Squadron, Cowes at 22.20.28 BST on Friday 15th August 2014 with an elapsed time of 4 days, 13 hours, 10 minutes, 28 seconds, smashing the race record by over 30 hours and setting a new world record (subject to WSSRC ratification.)
After four days of relentless, high speed racing pushing the crews and the boats to their limit, the strong downwind conditions abated just before dawn, as Azzam, the runaway Volvo Ocean 65 class leader approached The Lizard. The wind began to fade and with close to just a zephyr of wind on the south side of the Isle of Wight, Azzam were confronted by a tactical decision - to go inshore at St.Catherine's Point or offshore looking for breeze. It is a tactical decision that many locals will know having competed in the Round the Island Race.

This breaks the previous World Record for Women's Monohull set by Aviva, an Open 60, in 2009, by 1 day, 14 hours, 30 minutes and 14 seconds. SCA's record is subject to ratification by the World Speed Sailing Record Council. Of the women onboard SCA in 2014, both Dee Caffari and Sam Davies were also onboard Aviva when the World Record was set in 2009.

The Volvo Ocean 65 fleet are expected to finish the Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race this evening. Will Azzam, skippered by Britain's Ian Walker, hold off Team Campos and set a new course record? Who will win the battle for third place? Dongfeng, Alvimedica or SCA? Will SCA set a new women's record for the course?
Twist of Fate

The first three days of the Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race produced fast downwind conditions for the entire fleet. However, yesterday afternoon a northwesterly air flow headed the fleet yet to round Out Stack, and the changeable weather is due to continue today. Only a few yachts will benefit, for many it will be a disadvantage. After four days, the remaining competitors will be fully in tune to the routine of life at sea.
Yesterday, at approximately 1400 BST, Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing's Volvo Ocean 65 Azzam, skippered by Ian Walker, rounded the Fastnet Rock, leading the fleet and over 40 miles ahead of Team Campos, skippered by Iker Martinez. Almost immediately Azzam gybed offshore onto starboard and didn't gybe back for 90 miles. Team Campos followed Azzam offshore, but gybed for the Scilly Isles, 50 miles earlier than Azzam, which turned into a ten mile gain for the Spanish team. Bear in mind that while they can receive regular weather updates and position reports, the teams cannot see the RORC race player and cannot see each other's immediate moves until the next update. At 0800 BST, Azzam was 30 miles ahead of Team Campos with 130 miles to go and is expected to finish the race today sometime before dusk.
"We took the gybe offshore as a precaution," commented Ian walker by satellite phone to the RORC Media Team. "We wanted to stay in the best pressure and get a good angle to the Scilly Isles but avoid the TSS (Traffic Separation Scheme). Compared to the last four days, we are racing in comfortable conditions with the off watch able to get some sleep. However, we expect our lead to be whittled away over the next few hours as the breeze develops from behind. In the Volvo Ocean Race many legs end with this scenario. As we approach land the wind can change for the leader, allowing the boats behind to catch up. We have a big lead but if we park up, even for a couple of hours, it will completely vanish."
The battle for third in the Volvo Ocean 65 Class is currently being led by Team Dongfeng, skippered by Frenchman Charles Caudrelier. The Chinese entry for the forthcoming Volvo Ocean Race was 16 miles ahead of SCA, skippered by Sam Davies, and Alvimedica, skippered by Charlie Enright.
An Extraordinary Series of Events

Sidney Gavignet and the crew of Musandam-Oman Sail, a MOD70 trimaran crossed the finish line of the 2014 Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race off the Royal Yacht Squadron, Cowes, at 12.42.36 BST on Thursday 14th August 2014.
This is an elapsed time of 3 days, 3 hours, 32 minutes, 36 seconds and, subject to ratification by the World Speed Sailing Record Council, a new Outright World Record for the Round Britain and Ireland course and a new race record for the Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race.
It was almost unthinkable that a 70ft trimaran, with no ability to decide when to start, could defeat a 140ft trimaran that had decided exactly when to set off. However a fantastic boat, a perfect performance and an extraordinary series of coincidences lined up to make the impossible a reality.

"I didn't think this was possible but we had exceptional conditions and a boat with amazing potential that was used properly. I know this course well because I have the solo record for the Round Britain and Ireland. I like it; it is a great course, very challenging, and I am very thankful to Sevenstar and the RORC for organising this race. Loick Peyron was the record holder and he phoned me after we crossed the line to say congratulations. He is a gentleman and someone I really respect as a sailor and a person but I know he will want his record back!

Day Four: AM Update
At 0700 BST, Musandam-Oman Sail was just 100 miles from finishing the Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race. The MOD 70 was experiencing about 15 knots of northwesterly winds in the English Channel. Musandam-Oman Sail was still achieving a speed of 25 knots but the wind angle meant a considerable number of gybes, drastically reducing their VMG. The team have approximately five and a half hours to cover the last 100 miles; it is too close to call if they can make the line before 12:59:14 to set a new world record. The Royal Ocean Racing Club Media Team will be speaking with Musandam-Oman Sail's skipper, Sidney Gavignet, in the next few hours for a special report.
Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing's Volvo Ocean 65, Azzam, has extended their lead overnight and are now over 60 miles ahead of Team Campos, skippered by Iker Martinez.
Azzam skipper, Ian Walker, confirmed that another goal is within their sights during a satellite phone call to the RORC Media Team at 0600 BST.
"We are just rounding the Blasket Islands off the South West tip of Ireland, which seems incredible seeing as we only left Cowes less than 3 days ago," commented Ian. "We now have our running spinnaker up and conditions onboard have improved markedly. We have caught up on some sleep, eaten some food and are set up for what should be our last day and a bit at sea. We have wriggled away from the chasing pack overnight and now have a nice lead which we will aim to defend from here. It seems clear that the prize at stake is not just the first Volvo 65 but will also be the race record for whoever gets there first."
Ian Walker is referring to the monohull race record, set by Franck Cammas' Groupama in 2010 of 5 days, 21 hours, 26 minutes and 55 seconds.
Pedal to the Metal

At 1230 BST, Musandam-Oman Sail were 520 miles from the finish of the Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race. To set a new outright World Record, the MOD 70 needs to cross the Royal Yacht Squadron Line by 12:59:14 on 14th August 2014.
Musandam-Oman Sail has been on the charge all morning and last night averaged over 25 knots, hitting a top speed of 35 knots. At that pace the World Record would be broken by over 3 hours.
During the third night of the race, a northwesterly breeze of about 19 knots is expected in the Celtic Sea, which should be enough to keep Musandam-Oman Sail on for the record and make landfall at The Lizard around midnight tonight. During the night, the wind is expected to go lighter and back to the west, which could make for a dramatic last few hours as Musandam-Oman Sail round the Isle of Wight, before crossing the finish line from the east.

Day Three: AM Update
From the start, Musandam-Oman Sail had 3 days and 3 hours to complete the course for the Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race to set a new world record.
On Day Three of the race the trimaran's three hulls, sailed by three expats and three Omanis, are continuing to hammer on south. The lightening quick MOD 70 has hit the turbo charger, screaming along at 30 knots off the North West coast of Ireland. Currently Musandam-Oman Sail's expected finish time is approximately 1000 on Thursday morning, three hours inside the world record set by Loick Peyron's 140ft trimaran, Banque Populaire 5, in 2011.
"Records are there to be broken and it would be an honour to be bettered by such a great team," commented Loick Peyron by telephone to the Royal Ocean Racing Club. "Perhaps if they do set a new record it will also be good for the race. It will encourage other multihulls to come and try it - it is a fantastic course."
Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing's Azzam is leading the fighter formation of Volvo Ocean 65s that have now all rounded Out Stack and are heading home. At dawn this morning Azzam was passing Sula Sgeir, a remote island that marks the halfway point in the race and is best known for its population of gannets. However it is unlikely that the Volvo Ocean 65s, blasting along at over 25 knots, will have the chance to do much bird watching. Ian Walker, skipper of Azzam, called the RORC Media Team just after rounding Muckle Flugga at 2000 yesterday.

Teeth are chattering. Eyes are blood shot. Bodies are aching. When we do have the chance to sleep, it is in bursts. It's nearly 0600 and except for a few naps during the night, Team SCA has been up for 24hrs.
The waves are pretty unreal: walls of white water, nearly reaching the first spreader, come flying over the deck. Some crash over the cockpit combing and fill the cockpit like a bathtub. One completely knocked Annie off her feet as she trimmed the main.

Day Two: PM Update
Musandam - Oman Sail reached Out Stack, the rock north of Muckle Flugga and the most northerly part of the course, just before 1500 BST 12th August.
The MOD 70, skippered by Sidney Gavignet, has about 46 hours to complete the remaining 1098 miles to set a new world record. Musandam - Oman Sail has averaged an astonishing 24 knots on a screaming reach up to the top of the course and needs to average the same, or better, on the way back down. It seems that the wind gods are with them as the new breeze is from the North West and came in just as the trimaran turned for home. It looks like a reach all the way down the west coast of Scotland and Ireland and maybe, just maybe, Musandam - Oman Sail can beat the 2011 record set by Banque Populaire 5, which is twice as long as Musandam - Oman Sail.
Since the fleet left Cowes on Monday morning, the wind speed across the entire course has barely dropped below 25 knots and reports of over 40 knots of wind have been recorded by many competitors. The conditions have provided a full-on, proper wild ride but that has taken its toll with three retirements with all crew safe. The crews of Grey Power, Concise 8 and Cat Phone are all ashore and in good health. Austen Clark's Class40, Arwen, has not officially retired but the yacht is safely tied up in Great Yarmouth and competitors on the race course have relayed that all of the crew are fine. Stella Nova has also retired from the race after sustaining structural damage after hitting a large wave. They are returning towards the Dutch Coast trying to protect the boat against any further damage. The coastguard are aware and keeping in close contact with the boat. The crew are all well.
